So, I guess I’m back to writing this just so I don’t lose my mind. Also, another very different adventure is quick approaching and once more I would like to keep my friends and family updated on my progress.
The last semester at the University of Texas was a whirlwind of deadlines, term papers, and mono. I have graduated by the grace of God, and said goodbye to the darling boyfriend, who is on an adventure of his own as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Make sure you give him a punch on the shoulder or buy him a drink should you encounter my 2LT Horne, he’s a great man and I’m proud to be his girl.
In order to escape/fly the nest, I have joined the Americorps as a VISTA member. VISTAs serve a year-long commitment to a nonprofit organization and are generally known as poverty-fighters. I will be leaping from my lifelong hometown of Austin, Texas and moving to Bozeman, Montana where I will be working as a volunteer coordinator at a children’s museum.
Random, you say? Why, yes. I did want to get far away from Texas, not away from anyone, mind you, but just because I really need a change of pace. And Montana will be a change, indeed. I’m also craving more adventure and trust me, would be back in Africa if I could get there without selling my soul (or two years of my life to the Peacecorps).
Upsides to the Americorps: serving a community, making a difference, getting a real job in this economy, moving to a new and beautiful place.
Downside to the Americorps: a salary that puts me below the poverty line. But it’s only a year, and I’m used to stretching. After this my plan is to go to either graduate school or into the workforce.
So, that’s where I am. I have another month in Austin soaking up the sun and the lovely life before I leave July 5thish for beautiful Bozeman.
